De-bunkering is the term commonly used for offloading non-compliant bunker fuel from a ship.

The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 regulations, also known as the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), limit the amount of sulfur in ships' fuel oil. The new limit of 0.50% sulfur by mass took effect on January 1, 2020. This is a significant reduction from the previous limit of 3.50%.
